Did you know that traditionaly, the bridesmaids were choosen from the closest family members of the bride and groom and often they were supposed to be from wealthy families, aswell?
It was also customed for the future bride to pay for the travel expences and clothes for the bridesmaids. In some parts of Europe and North America, this is still a tradition.

However, in some other parts, as Norway or Victorian England, bridesmaids are not unwed young women, but young girls (like the flower girls).
In modern days, the number of the bridesmaids is choosen by the bride or according to the size of the wedding attendings. Also, nowdays, bridesmaids often are invloved in the planning of the event or plan the wedding reception, bridal shower or bachelorette party.
But according to the wedding etiquette, the bridesmaid is not obliged to attend to the bride, nor to wear a dress that is choosen by the bride.
